What We Do
Throughout history and still to this day, women throughout the world face obstacles solely because of their gender. They disproportionately suffer from poverty and discrimination. It’s for this reason that Soroptimist, an organization of and by women, chooses to focus on the special challenges facing women and girls.
Soroptimist means "best for women" and that's what we strive to be—an organization of women at their best helping other women to be their best. As a global volunteer organization of business, professional, and like-minded women we feel uniquely qualified to help women and girls live their dreams.
Soroptimist of San Bernardino (SISB) has maintained 3 core awards and 1 signature service project in addition to various community services projects that focus on women and girls.
Soroptimist - Dream It, Be It Program (www.soroptimist.org/our-work)- SISB WINGS (Women Inspire and Nurture Girls to Succeed) service project enables our Club to invite high school girls (ages 14-18) from the San Bernardino School District to enjoy a half day with focus on education and future careers, self esteem building, a keynote speaker, and a luncheon. The event ends with a full banquet catered meal to teach the young women which eating utensil is used for what food item and teaches eating etiquette.
Soroptimist - Live Your Dream Campaign (www.liveyourdream.org), which aims to inspire women to live their dreams, and encourages them to pass on their good fortune to others. SISB Live Your Dream Awards support women who are head of household striving to better their life through advanced education or vocational training.
Soroptimist of San Bernardino Music Award - We partner with a local middle school to award a musical instrument to a student. The music director chooses a female student that currently borrows an instrument from the school and meets certain criteria. We also partner and coordinate with a local music store to give us a discount on the instrument.
High School Student College Scholarship Award - We partner with the San Bernardino High School Scholarship Program. The program aids us in choosing an outstanding female student who has been active in volunteer programs, while maintaining a high GPA.
